ISO 17025 Certification - Laboratory Testing Standard
ISO/IEC 17025:2005 is the international standard used by testing & calibration laboratories, initially issued by the International Organization for Standardization in 1999 and subsequently published in 2001 & later on revised in the year 2005 further revised in 2017.
ISO 17025 incorporates all the ISO 9001 requirements that are relevant to the scope of testing and calibration services as well as specifying the technical requirements for technical competence. ISO in collaboration with International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) frames standards for everything connected to electrotechnical standardization. ISO/IEC 17025 focuses on the laboratory competence to carry out tests and/or calibrations. ISO/IEC 17025 Certification Standard provides guidance to owners and operators of laboratories on both quality management in a laboratory environment and technical requirements for the proper operation of a testing laboratory.
The standard is widely used as a quality system in environmental, food, chemical and clinical testing laboratories. ISO 17025 Certification provides the framework for competence, impartiality and consistent operation of laboratories worldwide.
ISO/IEC 17025:2017 – Standard for Testing and Calibration Laboratories
ISO/IEC 17025:2017 is the standard that can be used by organizations or companies performing testing, sampling or calibration. The testing results of such organizations with ISO/IEC 17025 Certificate are considered to be reliable and trustworthy world over. This standard is also useful for Universities, Research Institutes, inspection bodies, product certification organisations etc.
Transition from ISO/IEC 17025:2005 to ISO/IEC 17025:2017
Laboratories or Organizations already accredited to ISO/IEC 17025:2005 shall do the transition to new version within 3 years from the date of publication of new standard. During the transition period both ISO/IEC 17025:2005 and ISO/IEC 17025:2017 are equally valid and applicable.
The main changes compared to the previous edition of the standard are:
- Risk based thinking has been applied that has made reduction in prescriptive requirements and its substitution by performance based requirements
- Greater flexibility for process, procedures, documentation and organizational responsibilities
- Definition of Laboratory has been added
